Vein Treatment Treatment

Varicose to spider, this form of treatment helps reduce the appearance of enlarged veins. Common measures often used sclerotherapy and lasers (IPL).

Veins can become enlarged as in varicose veins or break causing distinctive red thread lines. In either case a treatment is available.

Varicose veins present as swollen, dark blue to purple in colour, with an uneven or lumpy appearance. They are caused by weak or broken valves within the veins, allowing blood to pool or flow backwards. They can be treated using a number of methods including:

* Specialised stockings called compression stockings that help the veins stay in place and the blood to flow more freely.
* Sclerotherapy is probably the most common treatment. This involves an injection that causes scarring within the vein, eventually closing the vein completely. The vein dies and fades in about 14 -21 days. It may need to be repeated but is generally considered a very successful treatment
* Laser surgeries. Again the purpose is to close the vein but in this case it is done through the use of lasers.
* Ambulatory phlebotomy. This is appropriate for small varicose veins and involves puncturing the skin with tiny holes through which the varicose veins are removed.

Thread veins
These are tiny red veins, often around the nose, that are caused by a number of factors including exposure to cold or hot weather. They are commonly treated with laser therapy (IPL). Pulsed, filtered light heats the vein and destroys it, allowing it to be reabsorbed into the body over time.

Varicose veins are usually treated in a medical environment and do usually require anaesthetic. The treatment is usually short. Results should be visible within 2 to 3 weeks.
Thread veins are usually treated in a beauty salon over a number of sessions - usually between two and three - although one session is sometimes enough.

Noticeable veins can be distressing - painful as well as unsightly - and the procedures to remove them tend to be very effective.

Varicose veins may reoccur in a different location on the legs and thread veins may also reappear over time. Use of Vitamin C to improve vein strength is often recommended.
