OVERVIEW
Body piercing, a form of body modification, is a process by which a hole or incision is made in the body and jewellery inserted into it. The most common is ear piercing but tongue, belly button, lip and nipple piercing have also become common.
WHAT TO EXPECT
There is no regulation covering the body piercing industry in Ireland. This means that hygiene standards are up to individual vendors. Restrictions on the age at which someone can get pierced is also up to individual practitioners. Expect a certain level of pain and a medicated swab to clean the wound.
BENEFITS
When done artistically and professionally, body piercing can accentuate a feature such as a flat stomach or ear lobe.
DOWNSIDES
The wound may and often does become infected. If you change your mind at a later date the wound may not close or may leave a scar.
