MiraDry is a treatment to reduce or remove the sweat glands under the arms without surgery through the use of microwave energy - a form of electromagnetic energy. Sweat glands do not regenerate so, if destroyed, the excess sweat glands are permanently disabled. MiraDry was created by Miramar Labs and FDA Cleared in 2011 to treat axillary hyperhidrosis or excessive underarm sweating.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Expect to spend about two hours in the office. Your practitioner will mark out the underarm area to be treated with a pen and apply some numbing cream to reduce the discomfort of local anaesthetic injections. A large number of local anaesthetic injections will then follow and these can be very uncomfortable indeed.
For the treatment itself you will lie back with your arms folder behind your head (to expose your armpits) and then a hand-held device that zaps extremely hot waves deep inside (to wither the sweat glands away for good) will deliver a single pulse per site in a grid pattern. If pain is felt then more local anaesthetic can be added.
Two treatments, spaced 3 months apart, are recommended for the best results.
Recipients report much drier armpits after one session only.
The local anaesthetic shots are intensely uncomfortable. Immediately following the treatment you will need to take OTC painkillers and apply ice packs to the underarms for at least a couple of days. Expect bruising, swelling, and possibly numbness even weeks after treatment.
