IPL / INTENSE PULSED LIGHT
A photo facial uses IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) therapy to treat sun damage, wrinkles, stretch marks or any form of discoloration of the skin. IPL works by releasing short pulses of light that are then absorbed by the skin. It is most commonly used as a hair removal technique but is also useful in the removal of redness – diffused facial redness - and thread veins on the face. It works by constricting blood vessels and stimulating collagen beneath the skin’s surface.
WHAT TO EXPECT WITH IPL
A 15 to 30 minute treatment in which the IPL “gun” is directed at the target area. A small, intense sensation may be felt. Skin may be burnt as a result of this treatment so expect a little redness and swelling post treatment. Although it is possible to see improvement after a single visit it usually takes 3 or 4 sessions before you start seeing real results. IPL tends to be sold in courses of 6 sessions.
BENEFITS OF IPL
Clearer, smoother, potentially flawless skin. For some it works to smoothe away fine lines and wrinkles too.
The treatment may burn sensitive skin if carried out incorrectly. Stripes, known as zebra stripes, left on the body have been reported. This is as a result of burning and is not very uncommon. A good practitioner should know whether or not the treatment is suitable for your skin type.
