Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of hypnosis. It can be used for many reasons, most commonly though, for addiction therapy, mood improvement and behaviour modifications. Ericksonian hypnotherapy is a form of hypnotic conversation between client and practitioner. It is similar to NLP. NLP or Neuro linguistic programming is a technique in which meaning is imbedded into words, through for instance repetition or suggestion to alter the behaviour of a person. It is based in the positive thinking movement with maxims like “there is no failure only feedback”. NLP uses techniques such as eye movement tracking.
Cognitive/behavioural hypnotherapy: Researchers contest that the use of CBT in conjunction with hypnotherapy may result in greater effectiveness of both treatments. Cognitive behaviour therapy is the identification of behaviour; the understanding of the causes of that behaviour; and reformation of the behaviour through changes in thought processes.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A visit to a hypnotherapist may be for a number of reasons such as giving up smoking; losing weight; trying to foster self-belief; and overcoming a fear such as flying. The session will begin with a conversation and expectation settings. Before the hypnosis begins you will be told you can come out of the trance at any time .The trance is a state of deep relaxation. The hypnotherapist will ask you to close your eyes and imagine yourself walking down steps counting down from 10 to 1 very slowly, they will then use a number of voice and narrative techniques to put you into a sleep-like state. While under, suggestions or beliefs will be placed for use later. You need to trust your therapist or the process will not work fully. Sometimes it takes more than one attempt. When the suggestions have been implanted the hypnotist will bring you out of the trance counting backwards from 10.
You will leave the session with an audio recording of the hypnosis that you can play at home to reinforce the message. This should be done every day for a week or so. You may fall asleep during the hypnosis.
Hypnosis works in a radically different way to other therapies. It can be very effective in addressing phobias, mental blocks or inducing relaxation.
Hypnotism is only as good as the hypnotist and it is very important that you trust them. It does not always work and the effects will wear off after a couple of months.
