Homeopathy is a form of treatment devised in 1700 by Homeopath Samuel Hahnemann. It is based on his doctrine of ‘like cures like’. That is, if a substance causes disease, if diluted it may cure that disease or miasma. Each cure is a substance that has been diluted to such an extent that no molecules remain, just a memory of the substance. The choice of which homeopathic remedy to use is assessed through mapping characteristics of a holistic picture of the patient. Remedies are set forth in the bible of homeopathy called Art. Homeopathy has been condemned as a pseudoscience by many organisations.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A full, and what many consider strange, questionnaire needs to be filled out to match a patient to a remedy. The prescription of small white sugar balls containing the diluted remedy.
It does no harm and may well work as a placebo. Some people are very much convinced of its effectiveness in humans and animals.
It may displace a more effective treatment. Though the remedies themselves are not expensive the consultation may be.
