Fractional lasers differ from other lasers in that they are more targeted and therefore leave less damage on surrounding tissues. They are part of a suite of treatments under the umbrella term photo-rejuvenation. It promises to improve skin tone, texture and elasticity, as well as reducing wrinkles and fine lines. It is also beneficial for acne scars and melasma (skin discolouration). There are many brands of fractional laser that differ in terms of cost, power, breadth of areas it covers, among other factors. Active FX, Deep FX and Fraxel are among the best known brands.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A consultation that describes the process and sets expectations. A facial cleanse followed by a handheld device or a machine that is placed over the face or body. The session will last between 20 minutes and 45 minutes depending on the area(s) to be covered.
After 5 sessions photo damage should be ablated, leaving smoother, clearer skin with an even skin tone and visibly less wrinkles. It can be used on other parts of the body, not just the face.
It can be expensive and may leave a feeling and look akin to a slight sun burn.
