Dental cleaning is a process usually carried out by a dental hygienist. It involves scaling, the removal of tartar, and cleaning areas that are difficult to reach. Advice on oral hygiene is usually offered by the dental nurse.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Similar to a visit to the dentist the mouth is clamped open and a suction is used to clear accumulating saliva. Teeth are scaled and polished.
Oral hygienists reach the parts that are hard to reach by brushing and flossing alone.
Research is at best equivocal as to the benefits of visits to oral hygienists. Over-zealous cleaning can lead to trauma to the gums or gingivitis.
