Cosmetic acupuncture is a branch of acupuncture that directs itself to facial rejuvenation. As acupuncture is based on Chinese medicine, a holistic medicine, the procedure necessarily involves treatment of other areas of the body. Needles may be placed outside of the facial region to draw qi (energy) up or down. Energy or Qi according to Chinese medicine travels along meridians that are mapped out on the body and very roughly adhere to the nervous systems channels.
Facial acupuncture does concentrate on the acupuncture points on the face. The insertion of small needles stimulates or unblocks Qi. The needles can cause tightening and lifting of facial muscles. This is a specialised branch of acupuncture. Traditional acupuncture will also benefit the face by increasing blood flow and promoting general wellbeing.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A questionnaire that will seek to assess whether there is too much or too little heat in the body. The practitioner will assess the balance of yin and yang - the two major divisions of Qi energy. The system also uses concepts such as excess of the water element or deficiency of fire and seek to bring them into balance. The needles are hypodermic and individually sealed. A mildly painful sensation of more than a prick may be experienced but is usually bearable without the use of any painkillers or local anaesthetic.
As Qi is brought to the surface, more of a sensation is felt, but it is not always painful.
As many as 10 needles may be inserted into the face and left for about 30 minutes before they are removed. During this period the client lies flat and is often very relaxed.
If there is a diagnosis of cold in the body a moxa stick may be used. This is a cigar-like charcoal stick that gently heats a needle to increase its effects. Moxa is not used on the face but may be used in the body to stimulate the correct flow of Qi.
Acupuncture will benefit the whole body and mind. It aims to bring serenity and balance to mood as well as body. Recipients often sleep better than before and find they have more energy. Facial muscles are tightened and lifted. There is increased blood supply to the face, resulting in a warmer, healthier complexion. Eyes become brighter.
Some people find it does not work or merely acted as a placebo. Needling can cause slight bruising. Many dislike the thought if not the process of needling. The questionnaire may be quite intrusive. 6 sessions may be needed to see a result.
