Chin Augmentation Treatment

Chin Augmentation is also known as mentoplasty. Genioplasty reshapes the chin region of the face. It is used to balance the facial feature, correct a receding jaw, microgenia, or reduce the prominence of the jaw. It often accompanies rhinoplasty, bite correction, or another cosmetic procedure.

An initial consultation will map out the changes you and the surgeon think are desirable or possible. X-rays are taken. Chin augmentation is usually performed with a local anaesthetic if just implants are involved. If the jaw bone needs to be shaved or shaped it is done under a general anaesthetic. The jaw bone is shaved or cut into shape and screwed or wired into place. Stitches and bandages finish the process. The operation lasts between 1 and 3 hours. An implant is usually silicone, Teflon™, Dacron, real bone or fat, although newer materials are constantly in development. It is performed inside the mouth so no scars should result though you are likely to experience bruising and swelling for a few weeks.

After surgery the jaw is aligned with the rest of the face, balancing the feature. Bite is often improved or corrected by the surgery. The effects should last a lifetime.

As this can be major surgery, the associated risks apply - such as blood clots or infections. Bruising and swelling are normal side effects of implants but swelling may also occur with movement of an implant. Teeth can be lost during the surgery when conducted inside the mouth, requiring correction at a later stage.
