The Golden Rules of Great Hair
2018 has arrived in style and you still haven’t managed to look like you’re walking straight onto the set of a L’Oreal ad. While the resolutions are still fresh in your mind and motivation is high, take some time to learn how to achieve and maintain healthy hair to give you the strong, shiny vibrancy that will ensure 2018 is your best ever year.
Don’t over wash
Little known fact: washing your hair every day actually has more negative than positive effects. Natural oils and minerals produced by your body are stripped from the hair and replaced with dry, heavy product. Washing your hair three to four times a week should be adequate for most people to achieve long lasting healthy hair.
If your hair is naturally greasy, rest assured, you will still be able to help improve the look and feel of your hair. Products exist that are lighter, everyday alternatives to traditional shampoos which won’t cause the negative side effects we mentioned above.
Take hair type into account
Try using a good quality conditioner after you shampoo. Conditioner will make your hair softer and more manageable after washing. It’s also important to choose products that are suited to your hair type, whether that be thick, fine, greasy or coloured. Each is specially formulated to ensure your hair type is specifically catered to, so don’t ignore the labels.
Try to avoid brushing your hair while it’s wet, this only damages the follicles further as the hair is more elastic and likely to break. Massaging the hair in circles while it’s wet will also help to increase circulation.
Towel drying and hair dryers are both likely to damage the cuticles of your hair. Instead opt to let your hair dry naturally and let it absorb the moisture or gently blot the hair with a towel. If you still choose to blow dry, get yourself a good heat protection spray which will minimise any damage that may be caused.
Leave chemicals in the factory
Try to avoid shampoos, conditioners and other hair care products that contain harsh sulfates, parabens or sodium chlorine. These chemicals will hurt your hair and cause long-term damage.
Eating right also plays a massive role in maintaining healthy hair. All foods that are high in omega-3s, vitamin e, zinc and biotin are particularly useful for healthy hair production. High amounts can be found in fish, nuts, sweet potatoes, eggs and spinach to name a few.
Maintain the cut
Trimming the ends of your hair every 6-8 weeks helps promote healthy growth. Losing an inch or two should be enough to remove dead ends. When applying any product to the hair, aim for the scalp and roots, as this is where 90% of the strength is based.
We hope these small changes will help you achieve your best ever hair in 2018! Find a hair salon near you NOW.
